Webb

I am the same as you, only different, and my hope is that I can share with you about Tourette Syndrome and help kids around the world.
Webb and his mom made a video about this syndrome called "Owning Tourette Syndrome". We're honored that they're sharing it with us and you. Click on Webb's picture if the link isn't blue to watch the video.

Mrs. Summers, Part 2 of 2

I go to two schools this year.  I don’t speak all of the languages the kids speak.  We start with a lot of pictures at first.  Then, I have materials that are in the different languages, but I don’t actually speak the different languages as the kids.  We use dictionaries and pictures and things like that to get started.  I have seen the audio devices that you stick into your ear and it translates for you.  Those are cool!  I do use the google translate app that’s kind of like that.  You can talk into it, and it will translate for you.  It’s kind of neat.  It doesn’t always do it correctly.  It works okay in Spanish.  I know enough Spanish to know that it works okay with that.  I find that after a while if I have kids that are speaking a different language in my classroom, though, I like the fact that I can figure out what they are saying.   I can speak back or answer them in English.  They think that’s really funny.  After I know them well, I can figure out what they are talking about.  I have two degrees and a certification – psychology to education.  I didn’t have a clue really of where to begin.  So, that’s where I began.

Mrs. Summers, Part 1 of 2

I teach English through the English as a Second Language Program here at Greystone.  That means, if you come to our school and you have more than one language, you might get to come and see me.  My degree is in Elementary Education, and I have a certification in ESL.  I lived and worked in Miami for a year after I graduated with a degree in psychology that wasn’t getting me anywhere.  And, I worked with a lot of kids in an after school program who seemed to be needing a little more assistance than they were getting at school.  And, they spoke all different languages so I thought that might be fun – to work with the kids that spoke different languages.  I am from Birmingham so I came back here from Miami.

I am thinking about Greek.  I am learning Greek.  I got it into from reading a Percy Jackson book. I am only learning how to write it right now.

First grade is great.  My favorite thing to do is math.  It’s fun.
What are you learning in math right now?  …long silence…

Talking to Marlee Johnson
Really, I am just remembering when you were in kindergarten.  I remember when you came to eat up here before your dad was a businessman.  He had a suit and tie on, and your mom was working here.  You were just 2 or 3, and y’all would come eat lunch with your mom.  Now you’re about to graduate high school and a grown girl, and, just so beautiful… you’re so gorgeous.

We are getting our first read books to Mrs. Fox from Mrs. Williams.  First Read books is where you are the first one to read it and you get a sticker -- so people know you were the first one to read it.  The Best Nest was mine.  The First Word Family was my first read book.
